How we write this

House Chapter's guides, articles and glossary are written by Claire Duffield. This page says where the information comes from, how often it is checked, what this site will not do, and how to tell us we have got something wrong.

Nobody qualified has reviewed this content yet

That is the honest position and it is worth stating plainly. The content is researched against primary sources and written carefully, but no solicitor, conveyancer or mortgage broker has read it and signed it off.

Until that changes, every page says “written by” and never “reviewed by”. When a qualified reviewer does read a page, their name and firm will appear on it.

Where the facts come from

Primary sources wherever one exists: GOV.UK, HM Land Registry, the Environment Agency, the Financial Conduct Authority, the Standard Conditions of Sale, and the deposit protection schemes. Where a figure comes from an industry source rather than an official one, the source is named next to the figure rather than in a footnote.

Anything that asserts a legal, financial, tax or regulatory consequence is recorded in an internal claims register with its source, the nations it applies in, and the date it was verified. Where no signed-off claim exists, the page says so and points you at your own solicitor rather than guessing.

How often it is rechecked

Every page carries the date it was last updated, taken from the record for that page. It is never the date you happen to be reading it. Registered claims carry their own review interval, most of them annual, and a claim past its interval is flagged internally before it is shown.

Law and rates change. Anything you are about to act on is worth confirming with the professional handling your move, and the pages that matter most say that on the page.

What this site will not do

  • It does not give financial advice. It explains how things work and what the options are; whether an option is right for you is a question for a regulated adviser.
  • It does not give legal advice. Conveyancing is a reserved activity and this is not a substitute for a solicitor.
  • It does not publish a figure it cannot source, and it does not round a number to make a point.
  • It does not accept payment for editorial coverage. Where a link earns a commission, it is labelled, and how we make money explains the arrangement.

Telling us we have got something wrong

Email hello@housechapter.co.uk with the page and what is wrong with it. Corrections to anything factual are made as soon as they are confirmed, and the page's updated date changes with them.
